What Ember Owl is
Ember Owl is a situational display of public wildfire data, National Weather Service alerts, delayed aircraft positions, and community reports. It is not a government agency, not an official warning system, and not an evacuation order. Always follow official evacuation orders. Call 911 in an emergency. Do not rely on the app as your only source in a fire.
What stays free
Radius alerts, night wake-me, evacuation orders and zones, the go bag, and Report a fire stay free and are not gated. The free map shows fires within 50 miles of you or a saved place. One saved place is free. An incident page on that watch shows the name, distance, size, containment, and official links.
Premium
Premium is optional. Monthly is $2.49 after a 7-day free trial. Yearly is $19.99 after a 7-day free trial. The family plan is $29.99 a year for a household, includes family check-in, and has no trial. Premium adds the nationwide map, aircraft over fires nationwide with a longer trail, unlimited places, the threat card, wind, the spread cone, smoke, the satellite layer, a perimeter timeline, family check-in, and the home-screen widget.
Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Monthly and yearly renew after the trial unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. The family plan renews each year. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google Play account. Manage or cancel in that store's subscription settings. We do not show ads.
Aircraft
Aircraft positions come from adsb.lol under the Open Database License (ODbL). Credit: Aircraft positions © adsb.lol contributors, Open Database License (ODbL). Positions are delayed by minutes. They are not a dispatch picture and not a clearance to fly. An aircraft marked unknown is only near a fire. It has not been identified as a tanker, helicopter, or air-attack plane.
Models
The spread cone and threat card are Ember Owl estimates. They are not an official fire-behavior forecast. They can be wrong. Follow the incident commander and the sheriff, not the cone. Satellite detections are labeled unconfirmed. Community reports stay unverified until a reporter confirms them, and confirmation is still not an agency incident.
